Phase two of trial of State of New Mexico vs. Meta underway

SANTA FE, N.M. (NBC, KYMA) - The second part of the trial of the State of New Mexico vs. Meta is underway.

The trial's focus is on what the social media giant needs to do in the wake of a March ruling that found the company didn't do enough to protect kids.

The state's Department of Justice is pushing a number of reforms, including stricter age verification, permanent bans for predatory adults, and safer algorithms.

However, Meta's attorneys insist the changes are so severe that Meta could cut off services to New Mexico if they are imposed.

This phase of the case is a bench trial, meaning there will be no jury, and there is no timeline for how long it will take a judge to make a decision.
