U.S. Capitol Christmas tree begins journey to Washington, D.C.

RENO, Nev. (NBC, KYMA) - The U.S. Capitol Christmas tree has started its journey to Washington, D.C.

The 53-foot red fir was harvested from the Carson Ranger District on Friday.

The tree, named "Silver Belle," will make stops at parades, festivals, and community gatherings across Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, Missouri and Kentucky before arriving on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol.

A section of the Mt. Rose Highway was temporarily closed near the Galena Creek Regional Park Sunday as the tree traveled down the highway.

The tour is all about "celebrating the spirit of the Silver State," showcasing Nevada's stunning natural landscapes and community spirit.
