CHARLESTON, N.C. (NBC, KYMA/KECY) - Nikki Haley's husband begins a year-long deployment in Africa as she campaigns for the 2024 GOP presidential nomination.

Major Michael Haley, the candidate's husband of 26 years, has been a constant at his wife's campaign events since she launched her bid for the White House.

Major Haley's a member of the South Carolina Army National Guard and is being deployed as a staff officer with the 218th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade (MEB) to provide support in the horn of Africa.

The haley family was all together on Saturday for the deployment ceremony at the Citadel in Charleston.

The brigade will first travel to Texas where they will go through examinations, and then arrive in Africa in July.

The couple's college-age son will now provide support for his mother on the campaign trail while his dad is away.
