TikTok CEO to testify before House committee

(NBC, KYMA/KECY) - TikTok's CEO will testify on Capitol Hill.

House Energy and Commerce Committee Chair Cathy McMorris Rodgers has announced that Shou Zi Chew will testify before the committee on March 23.

He will answer questions from the panel about the:

  • Social media site's consumer privacy and data security practices
  • Platform's impact on kids
  • Company's relationship with the Chinese Communist Party

Concerns about TikTok giving the Chinese government a backdoor into the personal information of users in the U.S. has led to some officials to call for a nationwide ban on the app.

Last month, President Biden signed legislation that included a ban on federal employees from using TikTok on government-owned devices.

More than two dozen state have enacted similar bans for state-owned devices as well.

This will be Chew's first appearance before a congressional committee.
