Yuma Proving Ground celebrates U.S. Army’s 248th birthday

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - The U.S. Army was founded on June 14, 1775, 248 years ago.

Yuma Proving Ground (YPG) honored and remembered Army heroes from the past and present to celebrate their success.

YPG commemorated on Wednesday with a cake-cutting ceremony.

YPG's Colonel Patrick McFall opened the ceremony with a speech about how proud he is of the soldiers and their families.

"It's because of you the Army is the way it is," says Col. McFall.

Keeping the tradition alive, the oldest and youngest soldier at YPG had the honor of cutting the cake with a sword.

The sword represents the Army's heritage.

"This is us celebrating what we signed up to serve and what we're willing to do is the biggest sacrifice in the world which is give our life for the greatest document I call the constitution," explained Col. McFall.

Col. McFall just so happens to be the oldest serving more than 25 years and the youngest is 25-year-old Sergeant Richard Simmons who has been in the army for eight years.

He said it's different being the youngest but is looking forward to learning more.

"Opportunity to be a leader to other people, for kids to look up to, and a lot of learning opportunities," said Sgt. Simmons.

Colonel McFall said it's near and dear to his heart to be a part of traditions that show what's most important.
