No evidence against former Mexicali police chief

MEXICALI, Mexico (KYMA) - Former Mexicali Police Chief Pedro Ariel Mendivil, who was arrested and accused of multiple criminal charges last month, was released.

After a 24-hour hearing, prosecutors failed to present evidence to support the charges against him.

Legal Associations in Baja California are now calling for the Baja California Attorney General's resignation, saying the charges and arrest were made without evidence.

"It is inconceivable that the prosecution showed up on the day of the trial empty-handed. They presented no evidence...only assumptions," said Elias Flores, President of the Baja California Attorneys Association. "The judge himself stated during the hearing, 'I cannot keep the former director in prison for crimes that are not being proven.'"

Former Police Chief Mendivil was accused by the state prosecutors of missing people, vehicle theft and criminal association.
