Former Mexicali police chief arrested

MEXICALI, Mexico (KYMA) - Former Mexicali Police Chief Pedro Ariel Mendivil has been arrested after being allegedly tied to several crimes.

The Baja California Attorney General's Office says former Police Chief Mendivil is tied to the disappearance of two young men.

The men went missing in 2023, and they say he could also be tied to more missing persons cases.

"He is being investigated for the crimes of missing people, vehicle theft, and criminal conspiracy along with any additional charges that may arise...and the investigation file will remain open in accordance with due process," said Baja California Attorney General Maria Elena Andrade.

The former police chief is now being held at the Mexicali prison, and a former police commander and 13 municipal police officers were also arrested.
