Mexicali parents concerned by safety protocols after students created Molotov cocktail in school

MEXICALI, Mexico (KYMA) - Parents at the school in Mexicali where students created and detonated a bomb have stated the school failed to implement any safety protocols, despite the potential risks involved.

As we previously reported, students aged 14 and 15 were detained after creating and detonating a Molotov cocktail inside a middle school.

We visited the campus to request further information, but was told the principal was not present.

One mother, who requested anonymity to protect her son from potential retaliation, stated it was not the school that informed them of the incident, but rather social media.

"A relative passed the information along to me; they sent me a link on WhatsApp and said, 'Hey, look at what's happening at your son's school.' What I did immediately was try to contact the school, but I received no response. I proceeded to call a friend and ask her to contact her own daughter, who also attends the school, just to make sure that everything was okay," said the mother.

She noted that the school typically sends out notifications regarding suspensions or other incidents, but on this occasion, their communication was delayed.

"In this situation, which I consider to be serious, as do many other parents, they didn't notify us of absolutely anything. In fact, in the statement they eventually released, they downplayed the incident, implying that nothing major had actually happened," she expressed.

Meanwhile, the six students remain in custody; however, the law must be applied, stated Governor Marina del Pilar.

"They are adolescents, but they must understand that these mistakes have consequences - that this is not a game. What they committed is a crime. A crime that could have led to situations we would now be mourning. Therefore, the juvenile justice authorities must take charge and enforce the law," said Governor Marina del Pilar.

Despite their detention, the students continued to share images of the incident with their classmates.

Details regarding these students remain unknown, specifically how they were able to construct the Molotov cocktail, and how they obtained the materials.

Authorities have exercised caution in releasing information, as the individuals involved are minors.
