Federal proposal introduced to reduce number of San Luis, Mexico council members

SAN LUIS, Mexico (KYMA) - In San Luis, Mexico, a federal proposal was made to reduce the number of council members as part of a national electoral reform promoted by Mexico's president.

Currently, San Luis, Mexico has 21 council members. That's one of the highest numbers in the country. The proposal aims to reduce this number to 15, aligning with a new national standard.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum mentioned that a salary cap will be imposed, since there are council members who earn more than her salary, which is $7,000 per month.

Sonora Sen. Lorenia Valles shared her reaction to the news.

"0.7% of the state budget, here in Sonora, since 2021, the governor has undertaken an effort involving dialogue and an agreement, resulting in a reduction of 500 million pesos. Funds that are now allocated to a scholarship program in our state," Sen. Valles explained.

The proposal includes a 0.7% budget reduction for local congresses and a gradual 15% cut to the senate budget over four years.

Changes could begin as soon as next year.
