Domestic violence cases increase in 2023

YUMA, Ariz. (KECY, KYMA) - According to Amberly's Place, in 2023, there was an eight percent increase in overall interpersonal violence cases from the previous year.

Executive Director of Amberly's Place Tori Bourguignon was able to break down the numbers.

“While there were many domestic violence cases in our numbers this year are up about four percent with domestic violence, more significantly than that it has to do with the fact that our numbers in terms of primary and secondary victims served is up by eight percent overall,” explained Bourguignon.

There were also over 300 new cases and over 100 new victims.

Meanwhile, child physical abuse cases were also up by 27 percent.

Bourguignon shares what the numbers mean.

“I think that’s an indicator that people are accessing the services that they need and that they’re becoming more and more and more aware in our community that help is available for these kinds of crimes,” expressed Bourguignon.

However, despite the increase in numbers, Amberly’s Place is continuing to do its best to help out.

“Our advocates were incredibly busy in 2023 they worked tirelessly and as did our interns and volunteers that we are fortunate to have on board,” said Bourguignon.

Even with a potential loss in grant money, they are focused on helping people.

“So right now we’re okay our 2023-24 funding is stable and we’re going to continue to serve the victims that come through our door or that we’re called upon to serve out in the community by our law enforcement partners... business as usual we’ll make do with what we have and make it happen,” stated Bourguignon.

It is important to seek help if you or anyone you know is suffering through domestic violence.
