Humane Society of Yuma hosting free adoption and microchipping event to ring in summer

YUMA, Ariz. (KECY, KYMA) - The Humane Society of Yuma is counting down the days to July 4.
Sadly, it is not a time for them to celebrate, but instead, a time to strategize and make plans for the large influx of animals that will end up in the shelter.

Executive Director Annette Lagunas shared, “It’s our busiest day of the year and because it’s on a Tuesday, we anticipate that the fireworks will last for several days this year, making it more challenging.”

The Humane Society of Yuma already has hundreds of animals in their care, so they need the community’s help to get them into homes to make space for the influx.

Wednesday afternoon they hosted a special day marking the first day of summer, which includes free adoptions, microchips, vendors in the parking lot, activities, raffle prizes, and shelter tours.

The free adoptions will start on June 21 and last through July 4.

And, microchip your animal! It’s free, easy, and painless and will help ensure your pet will return home if they’re lost!

The Humane Society of Yuma also asks the public to be cautious about using fireworks around animals.

Pets are sensitive to loud noises, flashing lights, and strong smells.

On the 4th of July and other days, people are likely to set off fireworks, it’s important to leave pets safely indoors, preferably with a radio turned on or white noise to soften jarring noises.

Also, make sure they are microchipped, wearing an ID tag and never leave them inside a car or take them to fireworks shows.
