Yuma community honors local cancer patients with Relay For Life

The event helps raise funds for the American Cancer Society, and gives locals a chance to honor loved ones affected by the disease - 13 On Your Side's Luis Lopez reports

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - While there are many ways to honor those currently fighting cancer, the Yuma community did so by holding its annual Relay For Life with the American Cancer Society at Desert Sun Stadium.

People who came to the event walked laps around the stadium’s field.

Everyone doing so to honor someone they know who is fighting, or has fought cancer.

One man making the walk included Geoffery Pixley.

Who walked for his mom, Coqui, who’s beaten breast cancer twice.

Geoffery arrived the morning of the event, which was actually a surprise for Coqui.

She had no idea her son would be visiting her from Phoenix, let alone making the walk for her.

“Oh my gosh, I can not even think how surprised I was, so happy,” Geoffery said.

Coqui was initially going to do the walk herself, but has a knee replacement coming up soon.

Which inspired Geoffery to take her place.

“She wanted to come out here you know what I mean, she wanted to be participating out here and, just trying to be a good son you know what I mean, didn’t wanna let her walk, so I was like, ‘I’ll walk for you,” Geoffery said.

As Geoffery made the walk…

Coqui still got to enjoy the festivities, helping to honor others who fought the same battle she did.

“This made my day, a few more days, I’m very happy to have him, today’s a very special day,” Coqui said.
