San Luis candidates pledge for clean campaigning

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - Unlike most primary elections, the San Luis candidates signed a pact to a clean campaign.

The pact was proposed by Nieves Riedel, owner of Riedel Construction and running for mayor of San Luis, who was approved by the San Luis Board of Supervisors as a way for candidates to focus on issues pertaining to the city and not mud-sling their opponents.

"It was the one thing that really bothered me, and I decided 'Okay, in this campaign, I'm gonna try to get everybody together. All the groups together, and let's set some rules,'" Riedel said.

After the pact was approved, Riedel invited many candidates to the pact, but only ten accepted her invitation.

"A clean campaign is always a good idea, and it was great. A long time coming. We've known our community to be at each other all the time, and that shouldn't be because it distracts from the real issues. That's what we don't want," Judge Juan Manuel Guerrero said when he first heard about the clean campaign pact.

Riedel declined to name who didn't accept her invitation, but she did offer what she'll bring to San Luis should she win the mayoral race saying, "'ll bring my experience, my tenacity, my focus on getting things accomplished. I'm a builder. I build things. I don't destroy things."

"Nieves is a very intelligent person. She's a hard worker, and she likes to work for the community," said Nydia Mendenhall, who is running for city council, on why she believes Riedel is the right person for the job.

With only four months away until the August 2 primaries, Riedel and the other candidates hope their clean campaign pact will bring a positive and necessary change to the city of San Luis.
