Proceeds from the event will go toward constructing a new men's shelter for those in need

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - The Crossroads Mission in Yuma is holding an online auction for a safe way to help raise funds for a new men's shelter. Items to be auctioned off include collectibles, brand-new bicycles, and televisions, among other items.

“We are trying to get a little bit ahead of the situation with not being able to have live events. We are having a total of 13 items up for auction”, said Azucena Solorzano, the Marketing and Development Director with the Crossroads Mission.

So far, the mission has been able to collect $170,000 through other donations. But the men's shelter has a hefty price tag, so the organization is still in need of help when it comes to doubling the number of people they assist daily.

"The men's shelter that we currently have is originally a 100-bed facility, it is at capacity so it is full right now. We would probably say that we could house about 200, but that depends on the overflow and how we're able to set that up", said Solorzano.

Cots are being set up in the mission's chapel because of the lack of space. The organization is hoping this auction will help go a long way toward constructing a new facility and offering additional services to the community.

"We want to be able to have expanded services like for elderly homeless men and services that are more targeted at room for improvement."

The items up for auction have been donated anonymously or by Crossroads Mission board members. The auction will kick off on Tuesday, June 1, and run until June 15.

You will need to sign up before placing any bids. To get started, head over to the Crossroads Mission website and follow the directions at the top of the web page.

"We are the only homeless emergency shelter here in Arizona serving this community. We also house people who are in the drug and alcohol recovery program, and we house people who are in transitional housing. So it is very important to keep those services for the benefit of the community and to be able to expand on those, that would be awesome, and it's something that we're really looking forward to complete that project."
