District One responds to community concerns about sex-ed curriculum

District One Superintendent sends letter to parents to clear up confusion.

YUMA, Ariz. (KECY, KYMA) - “The parent is in full knowledge if they are participating in our sex-ed curriculum,” Duane Sheppard, Associate Superintendent of Curriculum said.

There are questions among Yuma parents surrounding a sex-ed program approved by the District One Governing Board in January, in a statement sent to parents this week, James Sheldahl, District One Superintendent, said “District One prides itself on transparency and full disclosure with parents and the community”.

It adds the after-school, abstinence-based, opt-in-only program was thoroughly screened by a group of parents, teachers, and administrators before it was approved.

The details of the program were also reviewed by health educators from the Yuma County Public Health Services District.

"We really made sure to work so that these programs would be good for our kids,” Sheppard said.

If you would like to see the full curriculum, you can request it by calling the district at (928) 502-4300 and you can also direct any questions about the program’s contents to the Yuma County Public Health Services District.
