A Yuma school has received national recognition

Desert View Academy has been recognized by the U.S. Department of Education

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - It's a prestigious award and among the hundreds of schools in the country, one Yuma school was selected. Desert View Academy was one out of 9,000 schools in the country and one of five in Arizona to be chosen.

Each year, the U.S. Department of Education audits the country's education system looking for schools that stand out. In total 10,000 awards are given out each year ranging from improvements in scores to excelling among schools in their region.

On Wednesday, November 10th pride radiated from the school's campus as parents flocked to the school to celebrate being deemed a National Blue Ribbon school. Principal Deb Weigel showed her admiration and pride for each of her students

Desert View Academy is a tuition-free charter elementary school that prides itself in preparing its students for the future. As part of blue ribbon recognition, Principal Wegel was flown to Washington D.C. where she met with other principals and received the award.

Principal Weigel took the opportunity to thank veterans in attendance as well as wish the U.S. Marine Corps. a happy birthday.
