Local students compete for a chance to participate in state “Academic Decathlon”

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY)- The final leg of this weekend's "Academic Decathlon" took place at Cibola High School.

Close to 120 students from 14 different high schools participated in this year's "Super Quiz" round of the event.

Parents and loved ones watched as students competed in hopes of finishing in the top forty teams in Arizona and advancing to the next round of the competition.

Dan Zarbock, the Academic Decathlon Coach for Cibola High School said the event highlights academic achievements local students can accomplish in all fields of study.

"Everything from math to economics, to art and music. And they also have to compete in interview, speech and essay writing. So like you have in decathlon in track, this is a decathlon in academics. "

In 2019 Yuma High, Gila Ridge, and Cibola were able to represent Yuma County at the state level.

Cibola High placed 10th in Arizona, the highest finish by any YUHSD school in over ten years.
