Imperial Valley first fentanyl awareness event

IMPERIAL COUNTY, Calif. (KYMA, KECY) - Several leaders hosted the first fentanyl awareness summit on Wednesday, as this deadly drug continues hitting the streets of Imperial County.

The Imperial County Sheriff, the District Attorney, and the Brawley Chief of Police all spoke about the efforts being made to keep fentanyl off the streets and out of our schools.

The Mexican Deputy Consul said this event will help leaders work together, as fentanyl is a problem for both sides of the border.

"I think it will kick start some bigger efforts by the whole community to create awareness about the problem of fentanyl and try to work harder as a binational community with the government of Baja California, with Mexicali, Imperial Valley and try to have less victims of this big problem," said Mexican Deputy Consul Mario Beltran. 

The event was held at Imperial Valley College.

The next fentanyl awareness summit will be in the fall.
