Over the weekend, George Marquez was sworn in as the new district attorney in Holtville

IMPERIAL COUNTY, Calif. (KYMA, KECY) - George Marquez was sworn in Saturday in Holtville.

He's served as deputy district attorney for Imperial County prosecuting different types of cases, like criminal and gang cases.

Marquez says there are challenges ahead like the current shortage of attorneys and will do the best he can to make improvements.

“Also, at the same time we need to focus on some of these homicide cases that we have...we have about 19 homicide cases right now with another 12 or 13 under investigation I want to get the attorneys up to speed and training so they can prosecute these cases,” said George Marquez.

During his speech, Marquez recognized the long and intense race against Mario Vela.

He says transparency and safety for his hometown are his first priority.
