Sitting assemblyman discusses re-election chances

EL CENTRO, Calif. (KYMA, KECY) - Eduardo Garcia is a Democrat who was first elected to the Coachella city council in November 2004. In 2006, at the age of 29, he became Coachella's first elected mayor.

Garcia discussed how this presidential election will be historic.

“Well it’s exciting to have a Californian on the presidential ticket it's also exciting to see a woman who is very well qualified to be the next president in the case something was to happen to Joe Biden,” he said.

However, Biden announcing Harris as his VP was met with criticism from Sanders and Warren supporters many have said they are tired of voting for the lesser of two evils and may not vote.

“My message to Warren and Sanders supporters is exactly what Senator Bernie Sanders said yesterday at the DNC we all have to come together on this one umm because as it’s typically said this could be the most important election of a lifetime I think now more than ever that statement really carries a lot of weight this election for president of the united states could be a game-changer for the next 20-30 years,” said Garcia.

Garcia also said that money spent on the wall would’ve been better spent on stimulating economic growth in counties like Imperial.

“The immigration issue in this country there’s what 11-12 million people who are working and living in the shadows of this country  at the same time the investments going into this wall really could be better spent on stimulating economic growth in rural areas like imperial County who need economic growth.”

Garcia will also be on the ballot this November.

“So I feel really good about the progress we made through our legislation for our budget requests and victories for Imperial County, 28 million dollars for the new river, several hundred million dollars that a contract was just dished out for purposes of starting the conservation species habitat work at the Salton Sea,” he said.

Garcia also says if elected his main focus will be getting the Imperial County economy back up.

“Our goal is to flatten that curve, and to slowly begin opening up our businesses, people are back to work and we’re doing it in a safe manner.”
