Imperial County Relay For Life continues to its goal to help others fight cancer
IMPERIAL, Calif. (KYMA, KECY)- Cancer impacted Julie Pizzitola at a young age. She saw what cancer did to her father.
"We lived in a small town in Texas. And we had someone come and pick up my dad every single day of his treatment. And drive him to the town over."
For the last two decades, Pizzitola has made sure those who are battling cancer are aware of what resources are available to them.
"We provide free services and programs to anyone battling. And we are the second-largest funder of cancer research next to the U.S. Government."
Making it her life mission to help others in their journey to beat the disease.
Pizzitola added, "We have to end this disease. And until we can find a cure it's important that we help those who are going through it. I have a daughter and I want to make sure that she never hears those three words. That she has cancer."
Wednesday night, the American Cancer Society in partnership with the Imperial County Relay for Life kicked off their fundraising season.
Linda Shaner, a cancer survivor said every dollar raised matters.
"The more we have the more money we're going to raise. And we know how important that money is in the battle against cancer."
Shaner hopes to bring the event together for one common goal.
"We know we're all in this together. And it shows that our community really does take up this fight and embrace it. And know how important it is that we're all standing together in the fight against cancer."
