NILAND, Calif. (KYMA, KSWT, KECY)- Staff from Calipatria State Prison brought some Christmas cheer to students at Grace Smith School.

Close to 90 students received gift bags filled with a beanie, mittens and toys, along with juice boxes and Christmas cookies.

Janina Valenzuela, the Correctional Case Records Manager at Calipatria State Prison, said it's part of the their 24-year tradition of giving back to the community during the holidays.

" I believe just you know giving and being kind to one another. And remember the true meaning of the season. And just, we're all very fortunate and to share that fortune with others is truly a positive thing."

The event was sponsored by the California Crime Victims Coalition and the custody department at the state prison.
