Auction raises funds for local scholarships

BRAWLEY, Calif. (KYMA, KSWT, KECY)- The Elk Lodge in Brawley held a live auction earlier Wednesday night to raise funds for scholarships.

Last year the Elk Lodge raised over $5,000 in scholarship funds that were given to students in the Brawley and Calipatria area.

Justin Matus, the Elk Lodge's Leading Knight, said helping students achieve their dreams of higher education is one of the many ways the organization gives back to the community.

"Just to get your foot in the door nowadays is at least a bachelor's degree if not more. And it's extremely important that these kids have the ability to obtain these funds and that they're out there. And the just tremendous giving, from the community, helps this be a success," said Matus.

This year the organization hopes to raise $8,000.
