Circle of Friends from local schools participate in inclusive schools week
CALEXICO, Calif. (KYMA, KSWT, KECY)- Hundreds of students with special needs packed the Calexico High School gym to celebrate inclusive schools week with a movie.
The event highlights how a support program for students with special needs such as Circle of Friends makes them feel like they're part of the student body.
Cami Sturdevant, an advisor for Circle of Friends said about the program, "We're building a culture of inclusion. A culture of acceptance and kindness and reaching out and serving other students that maybe just a little bit different than we are."
Alberto Mosqueda, a "buddy" in Circle of Friends said the program allows him to form friendships and strong bonds with students with special needs.
"One of their moms told him to give their kid a camera. And told him take a photo with the guy who made you really happy and made you have a chance to go to special prom. And it really touched me, it really touched me."
Jacob de Santiago, who has autism, said he's never had to spend lunchtime alone.
"I feel good. I always spend time by my friends. I do activities. They say hi to me I eat lunch with them sometimes."
For Leylan Piceno, it's an opportunity for her son to learn more about family members with special needs and how he can lend a hand.
"When we have family functions. If he starts stimulating, Sean can, he knows what it looks like. Now he's able to assist him if need be. Pull him out of the situation if need be. "
Sturdevant hopes all school districts eventually adopt the Circle of Friends program.
