Local girl scouts promote early reading

EL CENTRO, Calif.(KYMA, KSWT, KECY)-The Girl Scouts of San Diego in El Centro joined forces with KPBS and One Book to promote reading for children from kinder to second grade.

Held at the El Centro Public library on Saturday, the first 60 participants received a free copy of the book titled "Dreamers" by Yuyi Morales.

Nina Crabtree, the Membership Specialist for the Girl Scouts of San Diego in El Centro said participants will have a chance to learn about the themes of immigration, literacy, and family, and hopes the event will inspire children to become avid readers.

"For some of them it's their very first book. So we're excited that they have this opportunity in addition to that it brings out our older girl scouts that come and help organize and execute this activity so it's leadership in all areas."

Remaining book copies will be given out by the Girl Scouts in future events.
