Illegal border crossings down 80% since January

Around 1,600 migrants are crossing the border weekly

YUMA, Ariz. (KECY, KYMA) - About 1,600 migrants cross a week according to the Yuma Sector’s acting chief, an 80% decrease from the beginning of 2023.

But on Capitol Hill, Republicans say the numbers are still too high.

“Only my Democrat colleagues would call it a success when monthly encounter numbers are near 150,000,” Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee Jim Jordan said.

Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas was questioned on Wednesday in D.C.

Democrats accused the Republicans of turning the hearing into a political stunt in an effort to impeach Secretary Mayorkas.

“Today's hearing will not be about judicial oversight or finding out the facts," Democrat Jerry Nadler from New York said.

A federal judge blocked the Biden Administration's new restrictions on asylum on Tuesday, but the DOJ now plans to appeal the ruling, so the restrictions could remain in place for now.
