Suspect in Idaho ambush shooting identified
COEUR D'ALENE, Idaho (NBC, KYMA/KECY) - There are some new details emerging following a deadly attack on firefighters in Idaho.
The suspect is identified as 20-year-old Wess Val Roley, who police say had dreams of one day becoming a firefighter himself.
Authorities say Roley intentionally set a brush fire and then opened fire as first responders arrived.
"Roley was found to be in possession of a flint starter and we believe that was his method for starting the first that eventually led to firefighters responding," said Sheriff Robert Norris with the Kootenai County Sheriff's Office.
Two firefighters, Battalion Chief Frank Harwood with the Kootenai County Fire and Rescue and Battalion Chief John Morrison with the Coeur d'Alene Fire Department, were killed and a third, Dave Tysdal, was injured.
During an update in Coeur d'Alene Monday afternoon, officials say the suspect had no previous criminal record, may have been living in his vehicle, and it appears he shot himself.
"We have not been able to find any manifesto. We have not been able to inventory the vehicle, although people that have seen the vehicle do believe it appears as if he was living in the vehicle, there was a lot of debris in the vehicle," Sheriff Norris shared.
