Road rage incident on the George Washington bridge in New York leaves one dead

NEW YORK (NBC, KYMA) - Authorities arrested a retired New York City Police Department detective in connection with a shooting that killed a driver on the George Washington Bridge Tuesday night. The NYPD made that announcement late Wednesday afternoon.

Victor Romero is charged with murder.

The arrest comes hours after he was questioned in connection with the case, which has been described as a road rage incident that resulted in the death of Koran Irvine, a 46-year-old con Edison employee and father of two.

According to the NYPD, 62 year-old Romero was tracked down by police and his vehicle is in police custody as the investigation continues.

The incident occurred Tuesday night around 7 p.m. on the upper level of the George Washington Bridge, heading into New Jersey, when authorities found the victim, sitting in the driver's seat with a gunshot wound.

According to police sources, a single bullet pierced the rear passenger-side window of Irvine's vehicle, struck him in the shoulder, and exited through his neck.

A surveillance camera captured the moment the victim, driving a blue Volkswagen golf, nearly collided with another car on the George Washington Bridge access ramp before the shooting.

Shortly afterward, the rear window of Irvine's vehicle was shattered by a bullet. Authorities believe it was a single shot fired from the other car.

The bullet reportedly passed through the driver's seat headrest and struck the victim, who died, the vehicle then crashed into the median and came to a stop.

The suspect fled scene.

The victim was transported to Englewood Hospital in New Jersey, where he was pronounced dead.
