Two deaths under investigation at the University of Mississippi

(CBS, KYMA) - Police are conducting separate investigations into the deaths of two students at the University of Mississippi.

Authorities say the two students died in different locations and that packages of an easy-to-get drug, Kratom, were found at both scenes.

Though investigators stress that it's unclear if the two deaths are connected.

Kratom is a plant-based substance that can give users opioid-like effects.

Authorities also say it's unknown if Kratom played a role in the students' deaths, as they await toxicology reports.

They are warning the community to avoid the substance.

Students at Ole Miss expressed grief over the tragic deaths.

In a statement yesterday, the Lafayette County Narcotics Team said, "We understand that uncertainty can create fear and rumors. If information develops that presents a confirmed threat to public safety, we will communicate that information out promptly."
