FBI looking into potential data breach on the dark web

(CBS, KYMA) - The FBI is looking into a potentially massive data breach on the dark web.

CBS News contributor and independent journalist Brian Krebs said he found an online marketplace called Nexus.

It offered to sell digital scans of more than 153 million driver's licenses from the U.S. and Canada, as well as travel documents and medical records.

Krebs said the site, which has been taken down, was promoted on a Russian cybercrime forum.

"They're not able to be reproduced necessarily for a driver's license in a real ID state because you have to have that holographic engraving that you show up and it gets scanned," said Chris Krebs, another CBS News contributor and former CISA Director. "However, there are plenty of other vendors online, including some of the more modern web three crypto wallets...they may take online scans of any of these purchased cards."

Krebs said he was able to find his license as well as other licenses for some prominent U.S. officials on the site, including Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.

If anyone feels as though their information was exposed in a breach, experts say the biggest step is to freeze your credit at all three major bureaus.
