Forensics and detectives analyze evidence in house party mass shooting trial

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - The Yuma man tied to a house party mass shooting that killed two people was back in court Tuesday for day six of the trial.

This is the third week in the trial of 20 year-old Jose Lopez. More witnesses took the stand in the courtroom including forensic scientists and detectives.

The Arizona Department of Public Safety (DPS) analyzed shell casings found at the crime scene. They received four different requests to analyze different casings and firearms.

"You heard testimony that there was a live 45 caliber gun, an unfired bullet, that was found somewhere around this area," said Deputy County Attorney Prosecutor Joshua Davis-Salsbury."

A forensic scientist said they are still able to analyze the casings even without the gun. But the defense later told the detective that there isn’t proof that they came from Lopez.

"So, we don't know if the live round was from Jose's 45. It might have been, but we don't know." said attorney Richard Parks.

The case was originally thought to be a three-week trial. However, the defense says the trial will continue into next week for closing arguments.
