One person dead, suspect hospitalized in car crash during pursuit

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - A 51-year-old man was shot to death in Yuma Sunday.

The Yuma Police Department (YPD) said they found the man with multiple gunshot wounds around 8:00 a.m. on Arizona Avenue and Eighth Street.

He was transported to Yuma Regional Medical Center (YRMC), where he was later pronounced dead.

Officers said they had a suspect and vehicle description, a white pickup, from witnesses on the scene.

Pursuit leading to crash

YPD said at about 10:45am, the suspect vehicle was located on Virginia Drive. The truck was unoccupied, and officers learned the suspect had a second car: a white Cadillac.

Officers located the Cadillac on East 16th Street and attempted a traffic stop.

The Cadillac fled from officers at a high rate of speed, and officers pursued the vehicle.

The vehicle fled into California and headed west on I-8. California Highway Patrol (CHP) was notified.

YPD officers continued the pursuit and the Cadillac exited at the Andrade exit, and crossed the overpass at a high rate of speed.

Stop sticks were deployed, and the Cadillac struck them near the Winterhaven and Los Algodones exits.

The car left the roadway and rolled several times according to YPD. The suspect, a 27-year-old man, was ejected from the car.

Active investigation

The suspect was flown to a California hospital in serious condition. There were no other occupants in the vehicle.

YPD said the victim and suspect knew each other.

This is an active investigation.
