Former MCAS Yuma daycare worker going to jail

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - One of the two former daycare workers at Marine Corps Air Station Yuma entered a change of plea on Wednesday which will send her to jail.

29-year-old Valerie McKinstry pleaded guilty to two modified felony counts of child abuse and 11 modified misdemeanor counts of child endangerment.

She originally withdrew her guilty plea prior to her sentencing last month.

The parents of the victims opposed the "no jail time" part of the initial plea deal, saying that the punishment does not fit the crime.

McKinstry will now serve 13 days in jail but will receive credit for one day already served.

She will also serve four years of supervised probation after her release.

McKinstry will self-surrender and begin her jail term starting June 19.
