High school district making 3 different learning models available

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - Yuma Union High School District (YUHSD) families have some important choices to make before the start of the school year. Primarily, students, and their parents, will have to decide how they'll head back to class next month.

All students will return for distance-learning on Thursday, August 6. They will continue their remote education until Arizona Governor Doug Ducey allows them to return to in-person learning. What happens after that is up to students and their parents.

The school district will offer teens the choice between 3 different learning models. Each is designed to meet a variety of students' educational and social needs. Full details on each module are available on YUHSD's website, but here's a brief overview of the options:

Hybrid Learning
  • Teachers provide in-person instruction two (2) days per week
  • Distance learning takes place three (3) days per week
  • Instruction in core subjects using YUHSD Cambridge Curriculum and electives.

Distance Learning (Canvas)
  • Students participate remotely through the Canvas Learning Management System with YUHSD teachers
  • Students take part in the same classes they would in their regular class schedule
  • Instruction in core subjects using YUHSD Cambridge Curriculum and electives

Yuma Online Distance Academy (YODA)
  • Students must enroll in Yuma Online Distance Academy
  • Students participate remotely through virtual instruction with YODA instructors
  • Instruction in core subjects and some electives
  • YUHSD Curriculum

All 3 options do allow students to remain eligible for competition in Arizona Interscholastic Athletic events.

“Your decision will directly inform the planning and preparation for the reopening of your campus, including classroom setup, cafeteria arrangement, and more,” YUHSD Superintendent Gina Thompson wrote to families.

Students can enroll in their preferred model on the YUHSD website.
