Lights for the seniors

AUHS honors it's outgoing graduates

The closing chapter of high school seniors across the area, nation, and world has abruptly stopped due to the Coronavirus Pandemic.

But recently, Antelope Union High School Athletic Director Rocky Jaime and AUHSD Superintendent Greg Copeland didn't want the Rams outgoing graduates go out without honoring them in some way.

Inspired by other high schools across the nation, the state of Arizona, and even Gila Ridge High School in Yuma; both Jaime and Copeland joined forces with Antelope faculty to turn on the lights of Buckeye Field every Wednesday and Friday nights at 8:20 pm (20:20 military time) to pay tribute to all the students and student athletes that were not able to finish out their respective days in their final year in high school.

One faculty member each night also lights a single firework at 8:30, before the lights get turned off at 8:40.

Jaime explains to News 11 Sports that the motivation to do this stems from the faculty wanting these kids to know that they'll never forget them and the endurance they have shown in this unique time in history:

"Some of these seniors have commented on it that they appreciate it. Just because we want them to know that we're thinking about them and they're not forgotten and that they are very much in our hearts."
