Islamic Center of San Diego lifts lockdown, woman taken into custody

SAN DIEGO (NBC, KYMA) - The Islamic Center of San Diego was placed under lockdown Tuesday out of an "abundance of caution" after a visit from a woman who apparently was having a mental health crisis.

Police received information from the woman's family that she was making suicidal statements, was possibly armed and heading for the Islamic Center of San Diego.

Security guards said she spoke to them briefly and then left.

The mosque's imam said the woman was wearing a hijab and looked like a Muslim, and believes she was there looking for help, but was fearful and quickly left.

Police arrived a few minutes later and locked down the mosque and the school there out of "an abundance of caution" as they looked for the woman.

They also had officers visit every other mosque in San Diego to determine that there was no threat.

Police said they believe the woman, who is from New York, has left San Diego County, but according to an NBC affiliate in San Diego, the woman, who has not been identified, was taken into custody for a mental health evaluation after returning to the center.

She is not facing any charges, the NBC affiliate in San Diego said.
