Nick Reiner will not face death penalty in parents’ murders

LOS ANGELES (CBS, KYMA) - Prosecutors have decided not to seek the death penalty against Nick Reiner if he's convicted in the killings of his parents.

Reiner, 33, was back in court Tuesday for a pre-trial hearing involving unsealing grand jury transcripts.

A grand jury indicted Reiner in July for fatally stabbing his father, actor and director Rob Reiner, and his mother, Michele, at their Brentwood home last year.

At a news conference, Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman discussed developments in the case.

"We have spoken to the victims family, prosecutors, law enforcement...have worked with the most senior people in the district attorneys office. After a careful and through review of all these factors, the district attorney office will not be seeking the death penalty in this case," Hochman shared. "That means that the maximum sentence that Mr. Reiner will be looking at is life without the possibility of parole."

Reiner has pleaded not guilty to two counts of first-degree murder with an added allegation of "lying in wait."

He is currently being held without bail and seeking access to trust funds to pay for private attorneys.
