Two dead in library shooting in Northern California
UPDATE (6:01 PM): Law enforcement agencies, including the FBI, released more details about the shooting.
The Chico Police Department (CPD) confirmed the suspect's identity as 18-year-old Bradley Sayer, and says he wanted to carry out a "Columbine High School massacre type of shooting."
"The suspect was a fan, and a fan for some time of social media involving Columbine type shootings, the school shootings. And had unfortunately made a deep dive into that social media community, and obviously lost his way in that, and decided yesterday to act and copycat that particular unfortunate part of our society right now, but he will be charged."
Michael Ramsey, Butte County District Attorney
"We believe Sayer was looking for a confined, populated location to attack, which he did. He did a walk through without a weapon first...left his car, went inside the library, did a walk through, then he came back to his vehicle, opened his trunk, and took out a shot," said Sid Patel, Special Agent in Charge with the FBI Sacramento Office.
CPD says Sayer fired eight rounds in total and had sever firearms.
He is currently in custody and is facing two counts of first-degree murder. He'll make his first court appearance Thursday.
During an afternoon press conference, CPD has identified the two victims killed in the shooting.
"The first is 74 year old Robert Johnson. The second is 46 year old Jacob Hull," said Chief Billy Aldridge with CPD.
Chief Aldridge also provided an update on the third victim.
"We have one female juvenile who we will not name, who was transported to the hospital with a non life threatening injury. was fairly minor, from what I understand. Broken glass kind of cut her on the side. She's since been released from the hospital, and is with her family."
Chief Billy Aldridge, Chico Police Department
Aldridge also added, "All three were patrons at the library; they were not employees of any sort."
CHICO, Calif. (NBC, KYMA) - Authorities in Northern California are investigating a deadly shooting at a public library.
Two people were killed Monday evening after gunfire erupted inside the Chico branch of the Butte County Library.
Police say a 911 caller reported hearing shots and people screaming from inside the building shortly after 5 p.m. Pacific
When officers arrived, the suspect, identified as 18-year-old Bradley Scott Sayer of Chico, allegedly fled through the back of the library before being taken into custody by law enforcement nearby.
The area around the library was temporarily shut down as officials established a family reunification center for those inside.
Authorities also say a child suffered a minor injury and was taken to a hospital.
The Chico Police Department says Sayer was booked into the Butte County Jail for two open counts of murder, and says Sayer acted alone while adding that his motivation was "founded in a desire to commit a Columbine High School massacre type of shooting."
The investigation remains ongoing.
CPD and other law enforcement agencies are holding a press conference Tuesday afternoon to provide updates on the shooting. To watch the livestream of the press conference, see attached video.
