Vegetation fire closes Highway 86 for hours

RIVERSIDE COUNTY, Calif. (KYMA) - A fast-moving fire broke out on the side of Highway 86 at 72 Ave on Sunday around 2:30 p.m.

The northbound lanes of 86 remained closed for several hours and remained partially closed the following day.

Cal Fire Riverside Fire Department put the fire at 80 acres.

The fire took out several power lines, causing the power to go out. The Imperial Irrigation District was on the scene, working to restore power to the area.

"Right now the containment is about 70%. Right now, we have multiple crews in the area mopping it up and looking for hotspots in the area," Cal Fire Riverside Fire Department Battalion Chief Cory Clausen told KYMA.

He said the cause of the fire remains under investigation. The fire department reminded drivers to be cautious as they move through the area.

"It's gonna be hot today. We do have multiple firefighters on the highway here. We'd like to throw it out there for safety, for everybody. Please slow down in the area. We have a lot of crews working, trying to mop this area up," Clausen explained.

No structures have been damaged, and no injuries were reported.
