Man dies after being badly beaten outside his Trump-themed home in California
ESCONDIDO, Calif. (NBC, KYMA) - A man who was badly beaten outside his President Donald Trump-themed Escondido home last week has died.
It's been less than a week since a surveillance video showed 69-year-old Kerry Sheron standing outside his pro-President Trump themed home when 32-year-old Thomas Caleb Butler walked up to him, punched him in the jaw and kicked him twice in the head.
The video doesn't show what lead up to this, but prosecutors say it was an unprovoked attack.
"Last night at 10:43 p.m., Kerry passed at Palomar Hospital and he passed on his own. There was no pulling life support or anything like that," said Jim Gillie, Sheron's longtime friend.
Gillie was joined by Maria Moreno, Sheron's widow.
"I want my husband back. I want my husband because that was my partner, a beautiful man," Moreno expressed.
In court on Friday, Butler was initially charged with attempted murder, elder abuse, making criminal threats, and battery. He pleaded not guilty.
Deputy District Attorney Ross Garcia was asked if those charges may now be changed to murder.
"This is still under investigation at this time. We don't have any answers yet to see," Garcia explained.
Gillie says his friend has taken heat for being pro-Trump before, but it's never turned violent.
"People would give him resistance. They'd come up and I'd be like, 'Kerry, doesn't that bother you? I mean, it'd get under my skin pretty quick.' And he would reply with, 'Well, they have the right to freedom of free speech, just as I do,'" Gillie shared.
It's not clear if Butler and Sheron knew each other prior to the assault.
