Los Angeles becomes first school district in U.S. to limit screen time for students

LOS ANGELES (CBS, KYMA) - Los Angeles has become the first major school district in the U.S. to limit screen time for students.

Officials unanimously approved a resolution that would eliminate the use of devices for students in kindergarten and first grade.

Teachers are also directed to impose screen limits on older students, blocking their use of YouTube and other video streaming platforms in the classroom.

"In March of 2020, we sent every kid basically in America home with a device as that was lifeline to continue education, but six years later we have to think about what makes sense. And there is research that shows the harmful effects of screen time, social media, cellphone and screen use for kids," said Nick Melvoin, member of the Los Angeles Unified School District Board.

The changes are expected to take effect this fall.
