Two in critical condition after small plane crashes in Southern California

VENTURA COUNTY, Calif. (NBC, KYMA) - Two people are in critical condition after a small plane crashed in a residential area of Southern California Sunday.

Authorities say a single-engine aircraft went down in a drainage area behind several homes in Ventura County.

Emergency crews responded quickly to the scene, where the two occupants had to be extricated from the wreckage.

According to the Ventura County Fire Department, both victims were taken to nearby hospitals with severe injuries.

Officials confirmed that no homes or other structures were struck in the crash, and no injuries were reported on the ground.

There was no fire at the scene, and authorities say it remains unclear how much fuel was on board at the time of the crash.

The FAA and the NTSB have been notified and are responding to investigate the cause, and authorities have not yet released the identities of the two people on board.
