Los Angeles County district attorney provides update on Menendez brothers’ resentencing case

LOS ANGELES (NBC, KYMA/KECY) - There is an update in the Menendez brothers' resentencing case.

Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman says he will proceeds with a court-initiated resentencing hearing for the Menendez brothers.

However, he plans to ask the court to withdraw his predecessor's motion on resentencing.

In October, then-District Attorney George Gascón recommended the brothers be resentenced to 50 years to life, which would make them immediately eligible for parole.

Lyle and Erik Menendez are serving life in prison sentences without parole for the 1989 murders of their parents. They contend it was in self defense.

Hochman says there are "legitimate reasons" to justify the withdrawal, adding that the Menendez brothers "don't meet the standards for resentencing."

"The key issue of exhibiting insight...full insight into their crimes and completely accepting responsibility for their actions. This is where the Menendez's, like Sirhan Sirhan, also fall short," District Attorney Hochman remarked.

The two-day resentencing hearing is scheduled to happen next week, Thursday, March 20 and Friday, March 21, in Van Nuys.
