Statue of Sally Ride, first U.S. woman in space, unveiled
SIMI VALLEY, Calif. (NBC, KYMA/KECY) - A statue of Sally Ride, the first American woman in space, was unveiled outside the Reagan Library Tuesday.
The statue was unveiled during the Reagan Foundation's annual Fourth of July celebration.
The unveiling marked 40 years since Ride made history.
The statue had the cloth thrown to the wayside to reveal ride in her in-flight outfit that she wore on the space shuttle Challenger, where she became the first American female astronaut and only the third woman to launch into space back in 1983.
The statue is the second to honor Ride, as the first iteration was unveiled at the Cradle of Aviation Museum in New York back in 2022.
