Kirstie Alley dead at 71, fans pay their respects

HOLLYWOOD, Calif. (NBC) - Fans showed up to pay their respects at Kirstie Alley's star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame following news of her death.

Alley's family says she was recently diagnosed with cancer and passed away shortly after.

Alley won an Emmy in 1991 for her role as bar manager Rebecca Howe in "Cheers."

The actress also received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in November of 1995.

Alley was 71-years-old.

Fans say they are shocked by the news of her death.

"A friend got [the news] on his phone and we couldn't believe it. We were talking about how is that possible. I didn't even know she had cancer and it happened very quickly. Super sad," said Rocil Kissling, a fan of Alley's.
