YFD to help California firefighters deal with “Rabbit Fire”

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - The Yuma Fire Department (YFD) received a mutual aid request from California authorities to join the Imperial Valley Stike Team to deal with the "Rabbit Fire" burning in Riverside County.

According to a press release, the request was received on Saturday, July 15 at around 1:45pm. An hour after California authorites sent the request, YFD personnel and a fire engine left Yuma to head over to Imperial County, California to meet with the strike team.

YFD says that a strike consists of "several firefighting apparatus with personnel and a team leader drawn from various departments." A team will stay together until their deployment ceases. Team members are assigned to structure protection duties in neighborhoods.

Although YFD personnel are prepared to be gon for up to two weeks, YFD hopes that they will return home soon. The last time YFD personnel were deployed with a stike team was back in September 2022 to battle the "Fairview Fire" near Hemet, California in Riverside County.
