Storms knock out power for thousands of Phoenix residents

PHOENIX (CBS, KYMA) - Thunderstorms bringing cloud to ground lightning took out power in parts of Phoenix in the early hours of Tuesday.

Footage captured by X user @SouthwestWX shows, what they said, was lightning striking and damaging power equipment. The video shows bright flashes of red, pink, and blue into a stormy sky.

The National Weather Service said storms were expected to produce, "frequent, dangerous cloud to ground lightning, locally heavy downpours, and gusty winds" Tuesday.

According to energy provider Arizona Public Service (APS), strong storms Sunday knocked out power in the Phoenix metro area and additional storms overnight into Tuesday led to more outages.

"Approximately 23,000 customers have been impacted by the storms with approximately 250 remaining without power," APS said on X.
