Firefighters battle Island Fire at Cibola National Wildlife Refuge

UPDATE (12:40 PM): U.S. Wildland Fire Service has provided an update on the Island Fire Tuesday.

In an updated press release, the Island Management Unit at Cibola National Wildlife Refuge is closed to the public, as well as Hart Mine Road, which has collapsed into the Colorado River.

U.S. Wildland Fire Service said, "Firefighters constructed dozer lines and conducted burnout operations" Monday.

While no injuries have been reported so far, U.S. Wildland Fire Service is asking pedestrians, drivers and boaters to avoid the area.

LA PAZ COUNTY, Ariz. (KYMA) - U.S. Wildland Fire Service says their firefighters are battling the Island Fire.

In a press release, the fire, which is burning at the Cibola National Wildlife Refuge, was reported at 9 p.m. Saturday, July 25.

The fire, according to Watch Duty, has burned nearly 3,220 acres and is 15% contained, as of Tuesday morning.

U.S. Wildland Fire Service said the bridge on Hart Mine Road has burned and collapsed into the Colorado River.

In addition, they said, "Wildland firefighters are actively working to suppress the fire and protect life, property, and natural and cultural resources," and said, "Engines, crews, and aircraft are responding to the wildfire," with additional wildland firefighters being ordered to "support suppression efforts."
