Arizona man convicted of first-degree murder executed

Arizona Department of Corrections, Rehabilitation and Reentry

PHOENIX (KYMA) - The Arizona Department of Corrections, Rehabilitation and Reentry (ADCRR) says a man convicted of first-degree murder has been executed.

According to a press release, 63-year-old Leroy McGill died by lethal injection Wednesday before 10:30 a.m. after a warrant of execution was issued back in March of this year.

Back in 2004, McGill was convicted of first-degree murder for the 2002 murder of Charles Perez, where the court sentenced him to death, according to ADCRR.

McGill tried to appeal his sentence back in October of 2021, but ADCRR says the Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals "affirmed the conviction."

ADCRR says Director Ryan Thornell was present for the execution, and says, "The process went according to plan and without incident."

Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Hunter issued the following statement about McGill's execution saying in part, "After more than two decades, justice was finally served for Charles Perez and the woman who survived this horrific attack."
