2025 Arizona Heat Awareness Week underway

YUMA COUNTY, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs has proclaimed this week at Heat Awareness Week.

According to Arizona Department of Health Services (AZDHS), the proclamation is to "highlight importance of staying safe during the summer season and spreading awareness of extreme heat."

AZDHS says last year, both Phoenix and Tucson had the "hottest summer on record with extreme temperatures persisting well into the fall season."

According to AZDHS, between June and October of last year, Phoenix and Tucson saw the following totals:

  • Phoenix: 70 days with high temperatures at or above 110 degrees Fahrenheit and a record for most days in a row (113) with a high temperature of at least 100 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Tucson: Broke the record for the number of days (112) with a high temperature of at least 100 degrees Fahrenheit

In addition, AZDHS says the state of Arizona saw an increase in heat-related deaths between 2012 and 2023, "with 990 deaths and 4,298 illnesses in 2023."

However, last year, Arizona saw a decrease in deaths with a total of 975 deaths, "marking the first such reduction in over five years," according to AZDHS.
